Are You Spinning Your Wheels?

In Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery painted Prince Edward Island as a pastoral landscape filled with rolling green fields, winding rust-red roads and sparkling blue seas.

“Look at that sea—all silver and shadow and vision of things not seen,” said Anne Shirley. “We couldn’t enjoy its loveliness any more if we had millions of dollars and ropes of diamonds.”

Who needs money or jewelry when you’re surrounded by pink and purple wildflowers blooming along the sides of the road? Add horses, cows and sheep, and you have a little piece of paradise.

Charlottetown—the capital of PEI and the birthplace of Confederation on July 1, 1867—even has flying squirrels. This heritage city is busily gussying up for some serious Canada Day celebrations, but a sense of tranquility and peace is still the overriding feeling.

But as they say, “wherever you go, there you are.”

Even here, I find myself overthinking even the smallest decisions. Should I park on this or that street? Eat an apple with peanut butter or beet hummus? Leave PEI on Saturday or Sunday?

I tend to overanalyze not just a little. A lot.

Here’s an additional tip from Anne of Green Gables:

“Why must people kneel down to pray?” asks Anne. “If I really wanted to pray I’ll tell you what I’d do. I’d go out into a great big field all alone or in the deep, deep woods and I’d look up into the sky—up—up—up—into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there was no end to its blueness. And then I’d just feel a prayer.”

Sometimes you can’t think your way to an answer. You just have to feel it.

In Are You Spinning Your Wheels? 7 Tips for Overthinkers and Self-Doubters I share seven things that help me overcome “analysis paralysis.”

I filmed the video in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland the day before I took the ferry back to Nova Scotia. I second-guessed that decision (I didn’t want to leave Newfoundland!) but the ferry only leaves three times a week and it’s time to start heading home.
